A group known as “ Igbo Patriots” has urged state Houses of Assembly in the South – East geo -political zone of the country comprising Imo , Anambra, Ebonyi , Enugu and Abia states respectively to urgently enact the anti -open grazing law as a solution to farmers /herdsmen clashes .
In a similar vein , the group called on governors of the South – East zone to reject the cattle colony initiative of the Federal Government and not to succumb to the release of land for its take off .
Addressing newsmen on behalf of the group in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital , on Friday, the Coordinator , Mr . Obumneke Okafor, said that the mission of the group was to embark on advocacy to houses of assembly in the zone with an appeal to consider enacting the law.
He said that incessant clashes between herdsmen and farmers across the country posed security threat to the corporate existence of the country.
He said , “ The cattle colony initiative is a grand design to take over Igboland , it is a gimmick, a propaganda which we would collectively resist .
“ We are demanding from the state houses of assembly in the South – East to enact anti – open grazing law , the situation of allowing cows to coexist with human beings creates problems, ”
The group described the measures adopted by South -East governors so far in tackling the crisis between herdsmen /farmers as palliatives, that would not offer permanent solution .
He said , “ We have observed recent incidents in Igbo land and realised that if some political and legal actions are not taken , things will turn from bad to worse .
“ We decided to write to all the governments in Igbo states to rise up to the most serious challenges of present days. ”
